I’ve been feeling inspired to capture my own little family with my big old camera! So a few months ago I decided to set up a little scene in our backyard and hop in front of the camera. I hung our white bedsheet on our clothes line. (Yes we have a clothes line! I LOVE drying out clothes on it when the weather is warm, nothing smells better than sun dried clothes!). Then I dragged, and by I.. I mean my husband, dragged over the bench from our picnic table. And that was it for the setup!
Taking these portraits was such a nice changeup for me as a Bay Area family photographer. It was fun to be on the other side of the camera! Here’s how I did it. I placed my big ol’ Contax up on a tripod and composed the shots that I wanted and then I hopped on into the frame! For these I had my husband handy so he clicked the shutter for me. But in the past I’ve just used a self-timer too, especially when i’m acting as our own film family photographer.
I ended up LOVING these so much. They’re simple and sweet and just some darling photos of me and my girls. And an extra bonus was that I shot all of them on a roll of expired Fujifilm 400h, and they turned out so beautiful! So much so that I’m scheming how I can offer portraits like these to clients. So I’m thinking of a Mothers Day popup with something like this, a super simple setup to highlight you and your loves!
I can’t wait to do this again, maybe with some different props added in. There could be so much seasonal variation and the possibilities are truly endless!
